*featured image: White subspecies of spring crocus, Crocus vernus ssp. albiflorus (sl. nunka) can be found in all parts of Slovenia, except for the northeast. It grows on rich and sufficiently damp soils. The one pictured here is a bit unusual: its violet-striped petals resemble another species, Crocus reticulatus (sl. progasti žafran) that can be found in a very different habitat (on soils that are poor with nutrients, dry and warm). The specimen pictured here can be differentiated from the latter by its lack of yellow-coloured base of the inner side of its petals. I found it in Stružnica above the river Kolpa.
