*featured image: From March through May, an alluringly beautiful flower with scarlet petals and blue anthers appears in scrub and grassland along the Mediterranean coast (and inland) from France to Turkey. I found the above specimen of broad-leaved anemone, Anemone hortensis (sl. vrtna vetrnica), next to a motorway lay-by in Dalmatia. Its ornamental appearance, along with its Latin and Slovenian names, can easily mislead the observer into thinking it must be a cultivated species. Pollinating insects like this anemone just as much as I do, if not more. It can be, however, dispersed by the wind as well.
